Smart Lock – Engine Immobiliser for Smarter, Safer Boating
The OLAS Smart Lock is an advanced engine immobiliser feature built into the OLAS Guardian system. Designed to bring added security and peace of mind to your vessel, Smart Lock prevents engine start-up unless an authorised OLAS tag is detected or a secure PIN code is entered via the OLAS mobile app.
Whether your boat is unattended at the dock or you're switching between multiple users, Smart Lock helps deter unauthorised use while seamlessly integrating with your existing OLAS safety system.
🔒 Prevent unauthorised engine use

📲 Controlled and configured through the OLAS app
💡 Ideal for both recreational and commercial boats
With OLAS Smart Lock, you’re always in control - even when you’re not on board.
Customise Your OLAS Safety System with Alert Settings
View how to setup your Alert Settings video
The Alert Settings in the OLAS app give you greater control over how your safety system responds if a tag disconnects from your vessel.
Detection Time – Set how long the system waits before triggering an alarm if a tag is lost. A longer detection time gives the tag more opportunity to reconnect without activating a false alarm – ideal for larger boats or when moving around with obstacles on deck.
Alert Delay – This optional setting gives you a clear, audible warning before an MOB alarm or engine cut-off is activated. It’s particularly useful when building confidence in the system, offering reassurance that you'll get a warning before any automatic shut-off occurs.
Whether you’re cruising solo or managing a busy deck, adjusting these settings helps tailor OLAS to your style of boating – ensuring your safety system works with you, not against you.
All settings are easily accessed through the free OLAS mobile app, available for iOS and Android.
Standby Mode – Flexible Safety, When You Need It
OLAS Standby Mode gives you the flexibility to keep the OLAS safety system running quietly in the background, ready to reactivate the moment it’s needed.
Why Use Standby Mode?
If you’re not actively using the wireless engine cut-off or MOB alarm - such as during calm conditions, while moored, or when using the vessel at anchor - you can pause active tracking without fully powering down. The system remains connected but won’t trigger alarms or engine cut-offs until reactivated.
Easy Activation, Anytime
Standby Mode can be entered in two simple ways - either through the OLAS mobile app or by pressing the dash-mounted Control Switch. It’s quick, intuitive, and ensures you can easily toggle the system as needed.
Ready When You Are
Perfect for powerboat operators who may frequently move away from the helm, or for when conditions start to turn, Standby Mode allows you to resume full operation instantly—no need to reconnect or restart the system.
Controlled via the OLAS mobile app or the physical switch, Standby Mode helps you stay in control while maintaining readiness for any situation.
Whether you're relaxing, fishing, or preparing for rougher weather, OLAS Standby Mode offers safety on standby - so you're always one step ahead.
Solo Mode – Smart Safety for Skippers Going It Alone
When activated, Solo Mode adds an extra layer of protection by automatically sending an SMS alert if you fall overboard and become separated from your vessel. The alert includes your GPS position, vessel name and time of incident - helping ensure someone knows where to find you, even if you're alone and unable to call for help.
Perfect for anyone heading out alone who wants peace of mind
No wiring, no complicated setup - just smart, simple safety from your phone.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take for the engine to stop after a man overboard incident?
By default, the engine cuts off approximately 3 seconds after a tag disconnects from the Guardian hub.
This response time can be customised in the Alert Settings.
- if false alerts occur, allowing the tag time to reconnect.
- to introduce a pre-warning (audible beeps) before cut-off. This is useful for troubleshooting and reassurance during use.
Can I start the engine without a connected tag?
- Without Smart Lock activated: Yes, you can start the engine. The system will emit a warning beep if no tags are connected. You can override this by putting the Guardian into Standby Mode.
- With Smart Lock activated: A tag must be connected, or the system unlocked via the OLAS mobile app using your PIN code.
What’s the connection range of the tags?
Tags disconnect instantly when submerged in open water, triggering engine cut-off.
Alternatively, use the Helm Tag setting via the app to customise the disconnection distance — ideal for ensuring the engine cuts even if the tag remains onboard.
What do I need to do when returning to my boat?
- Power on your vessel – the Guardian will activate automatically.
- If your tag is already switched on, it will auto-connect.
- If it’s off, simply power it up — the Guardian will recognise and reconnect to it.
How do I know my tag is connected?
- Solid green light on the control switch = tag is connected.
- Flashing red and green = no tags are connected.
- Solid red = system in standby. Press the control switch once to return to tracking.
For confirmation: the OLAS app will display your tag's serial number will display when connected.
Do all tags cut the engine when disconnected?
By default, yes.
However, using the OLAS app, you can customise tags to trigger only a MOB alarm without stopping the engine - ideal for passengers or pets.
How long does the tag battery last?
- The OLAS Tag (CR2477) lasts up to 3 months if left on continuously. For best performance, turn it off if not in use for more than 2 days. Click for a video on how to change the battery.
- The OLAS T2 Tag is USB-rechargeable and lasts up to 6 days on a single 3-hour charge. Learn more.
Does the Guardian work with multiple engines?
Yes, the Guardian can be connected to up to three outboard engines using the OLAS Multi-Engine Connector.
How do I unlock the Smart Lock/Immobiliser?
You can either:
- Connect a Smart Key tag (assigned via the OLAS app), or
- Enter your PIN code in the OLAS app to unlock the system.

freedom to move
A wireless kill cord allows free movement around the boat without the need to constantly attach and detach a physical kill cord.
Saving lives
The OLAS Guardian ensures that power boat and RIB drivers can stop their boat instantly if the skipper or crew get separated, preventing accidents from unmanned, uncontrolled vessels.

Customisable Tag Modes
- Engine stop - it acts as a kill cord, stopping the vessel when the tag is out of range, without triggering MOB alerts.
- MOB alert - it alerts the vessel without cutting the engine.
- Engine stop + MOB alert - this mode triggers crew alerts and cuts off the engine.

Theft deterrent - engine immobiliser
